Call Box: Will Confederate soldier statue remain in Hemming Park?
Dear Call Box: I heard a rumor that there are plans to remove the statue of the Confederate soldier from Hemming Park. This statue has been standing since 1898. The park is named after Charles Hemming, a Confederate soldier. He donated the statue to the city, and the city named the park after him. Is Jacksonville to become another New Orleans and try to erase and remove history? The group, Friends of Hemming Park, wants the space to put in a fountain, as seen from their concept drawings. Despite either opinion, construction is expected to start June 1 and will last approximately four months if everything goes according to plan. The ..

  • Pastor offers inspiration, coffee and pizza to homeless in downtown ...

“I start smelling the garlic, and I know I only have a few more minutes to preach,” said Steve Womack, known as “Pastor Steve” to his listeners. Womack got the laughs he was aiming for, but he was only half-kidding. Once the aroma of pizza begins to fill the air, it’s time to think about wrapping up his Saturday morning sermons at the CourtYard Cafe and let the people eat. Womack has a name for the gatherings at the restaurant across from the Duval County Courthouse: “Rally at the Cafe.” He’s ..

Tia Mitchell: Fundraising numbers show us the 2016 races to watch
I have said before that money alone can never tell the complete story about a politician or an issue. The person who raises the most money is not guaranteed to win. However, fundraising is an important indicator of a candidate’s strength during the election season. With legislative campaigns gearing up ahead of June qualifying and August primaries that most often decide races (a topic for another column), the monthly finance reports provide useful information. This week, I decided to take a loo..

Sunday Business Notebook: Demolitions planned at St. Vincent's
There’s some major demolition about to take place at St. Vincent’s HealthCare in Riverside. Seton Hall and Bryan Auditorium will be torn down. The hospital doesn’t have plans for the space yet, so the area will go green until there is one. Seton Hall dates back to 1952 and was the nursing school and dorm until 1973 when the school closed. Since then it’s served other purposes, but Kyle Sieg, spokesman for St. Vincent’s, said time has taken its toll on the building and it was time to take it dow..
